BerlKönig is a ride-pooling service in Berlin provided by Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) and ViaVan.
It provides affordable, shared and environmentally friendly rides with the individual mobility of a car, yet is almost as cheap as a bus.
How much does a ride cost?
The standard price comprises a basic price per kilometre.
It is based on a route that has been pre-calculated for the optimal journey time (with no detours for multiple destinations) plus a premium during peak hours. The basic price is EUR 1.50 per kilometre. Regardless of the number of kilometres travelled, however, the minimum price is EUR 4.00.
If a customer books a ride for multiple people at the same time, the price per passenger is just half of the standard ticket price. When sales initiatives are running, customers can gain discounts on all components of the ride price. The ride price will be shown to you when you make a booking. BerlKönig will pick you up in a few minutes and off you go. Our ride-sharing service pools the individual routes of every passenger. Up to six people can ride together – even in a wheelchair accessible vehicle.
You are contributing to a cleaner environment. The more people use BerlKönig, the less CO2 and fine dust is produced, the amount of traffic decreases and Berlin becomes a better place to live.

To reset your password, simply open the BerlKönig app and click ‘Log in’. Then follow these steps:
– In the password box, press ‘I have forgotten my password’
– Enter your phone number and press ‘Send’.
– Get the new password and go back into the app
– You can now log in using the password we sent you in a message
– Once you have logged in, you can change your password
– Click on the menu icon in the top left and then on the pencil icon to edit your profile
– Click on ‘Change password’
– Enter your current password that was sent to you in the message
– Enter a new password and click ‘Save’.
No problem! Simply send us a quick message by replying to one of your text messages and we will be happy to change your booking for you as long as places are still available in the vehicle. If the vehicle is fully booked, we might have to ask you to make another booking.
Yes. The BVG FahrInfo app displays BerlKönig if BerlKönig can provide you with a better alternative to other public transport options, use the link to be redirected to BerlKönig.
At the moment, rides cannot be pre-booked as the routes are calculated spontaneously. However, we strive to provide you with the reliability you would like through extremely high availability.
The BerlKönig app currently supports booking rides for up to six people. When choosing your collection point in the app, simply press + or – on the screen to show how many people are with you.
The person booking the ride has to come along too. Unfortunately, you cannot book a ride only for the people with you.

People aged 14 and over can create an account and use the service independently with their parents’ permission. People under the age of 14 can only use BerlKönig if accompanied by an adult.
No. BerlKönig is not a taxi, it relies on the environmentally friendly practice of sharing vehicles and rides. By booking a ride with BerlKönig, you declare your willingness to share the ride with other passengers.
STEP 1: In the app, move the map until the blue marker is at your chosen pick-up point and touch ‘Get on here’. You can also enter the address manually in the search bar or allow the app to access your phone’s location.
STEP 2: Move the map until the blue marker is at your chosen destination and touch ‘Get off here’. You can also enter the address manually in the search bar. The app will search for available vehicles and connect you with the best vehicle for your ride.
STEP 3: All of the details are displayed, including the exact collection point and the price of the ride. Check the ride information and click ‘Book this ride’. After booking, you will receive information about the vehicle that will pick you up.
When you use the app for the first time, you have to click on ‘Register’ and create an account before you can log in and book a ride.
Step 1: Click on ‘Register’ on the starting screen in the app.
Step 2: Enter the necessary information on the first page of this screen.
Step 3: Click on ‘Continue’ to go to the second page. Enter your payment method there. As soon as you have done this, press ‘Join’ to start using the app.
Initially, BerlKönig operates within the eastern S-Bahn ring and in Gesundbrunnen, Michelangelo-Kiez and the Komponistenviertel. This also includes Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg. Please click here to view a map of the service area.
BerlKönig operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Its availability is high. Most of the time, we will pick you up in under ten minutes.
Initially, you can only use BerlKönig within the predefined service areas in Berlin. You have to register for the app in order to use ViaVan in Amsterdam and London.
Once you have booked a ride, the app shows the collection point where the vehicle will pick you up. It might be a bus stop or another stop (e.g. crossroads). The actual collection point will be displayed in the app – it might be a few minutes’ walk away from your preferred collection point, so you have to get there in good time in order to wait for the vehicle.
The app will notify you when the vehicle is two minutes away from the collection point and again when it arrives. If you have any questions, you can reply to the message and our support team will assist you. If the driver has already arrived at the collection point, you can also call him or her directly by pressing the small phone icon. Please be punctual. If you are more than 90 seconds late, the vehicle will drive off without you. This is the only way for us to transport all passengers to their destinations quickly and efficiently. You can track the vehicle live in the app.
After you have chosen your pick-up point and destination in the app, the app will show you the estimated arrival time of your vehicle. You will receive a message when your vehicle is two minutes away and another one when it reaches the pick-up point.
BerlKönig is a sharing service for multiple passengers. Our drivers wait for 90 seconds while we try to contact you. If you do not arrive at the collection point by then, BerlKönig will unfortunately not be able to wait any longer. Unfortunately, we will still have to charge you for the ride. This is the only way for us to keep our rides efficient and affordable for everyone.
Do not panic if you are waiting at your collection point and cannot find the vehicle! Simply call the driver using the phone icon in the app or send a short message to the BerlKönig support team firstname.lastname@example.org.
BerlKönig is not a door-to-door service. The pick-up point and destinations are bus stops and other stops within the service area that customers are able to reach quickly on foot (e.g. crossroads and street corners). This system makes it easier to pool rides, reduces detours for other passengers and ensures that the price of our service remains low.
BerlKönig cannot be flagged down like a taxi for a spontaneous ride. A ride can only be ordered through the app. This is the only way to ensure that rides are pooled optimally and expectations are met in a satisfactory manner.
If you request a specific ride, we will send you a specific price with a pick-up time. Pick-up times depend on the current level of demand as well as the amount of traffic.
On average, however, you will only have to wait a few minutes for your BerlKönig. We cannot guarantee our arrival times, yet we manage our vehicles so efficiently that detours become manageable and your arrival will not be delayed by any significant amount of time. During the ride, passengers can view the arrival time in the app in real time.
Your BerlKönigmap should definitely not point to a foreign location. If you want to be located automatically, please ensure that location services are active for the BerlKönig app on your phone. If you continue to have problems with this, please contact email@example.com.
Der BerlKönig is not a door-to-door service. When you book a ride, our system will suggest a pick-up point on a nearby street corner or at a bus stop where the traffic flows in the direction of your ride. If problems occur, please send a message to our Customer support, by replying to one of our messages.
Mistakes happen and plans change, as can your destination from time to time. We can handle change requests as long as the change does not cause a delay for other passengers in the vehicle. You can send a message to our customer support and we will try to comply with your request.
If you are not in the vehicle yet, you can cancel your ride free of charge within 60 seconds of booking it and book another one with your new destination.
Oh no, we are sorry that we were unable to take you with us. If your ride has been marked as a ‘No show’ and you still have to travel, please book another ride through your app.
Children can book and use BerlKönig on their own if they are at least 14 years of age and have permission from a parent. Otherwise, they have to travel with an adult. However, BerlKönig cannot guarantee any child seats. You are responsible for bringing child seats or booster seats for your children. Please note that a seat has to be booked for every person (including small children).
We welcome all types of companion dog belonging to people with disabilities or companion dog trainers free of charge as long as you are able to provide the driver with evidence (e.g. a severely handicapped pass). Small animals are permitted at the discretion of the driver as long as they are in suitable containers. Drivers are not obliged to allow small animals on board. You transport animals at your own risk and on your own responsibility.
The German Federal Animal Protection Act (TierSchG) and the Law on the Keeping and Walking of Dogs in Berlin (Berliner Hundegesetz) must be complied with, especially the duty to muzzle dogs imposed by the latter.
You are not legally entitled to bring luggage into the vehicle. We ask our guests to limit personal items to one piece of luggage of a reasonable size.
If space is available, items of luggage may or may not be permitted at the discretion of the driver.
Smoking of any kind is prohibited in our vehicles. This includes e-cigarettes.
Please help us keep our vehicles clean and avoid bringing and consuming food and drink in our vehicles.
No. Drivers are not permitted to transport unattended packages for our passengers.
BVG does not tolerate discrimination of any kind against other passengers or our drivers on the basis of their race, nationality, religion, gender, physical disabilities, age, sexual identity or sexual orientation. Passengers who infringe against the anti-discrimination policy of BerlKönig will be banned from BerlKönig.
You can also speak to the driver if you believe that other passengers are behaving in a dangerous or inappropriate manner. The driver is responsibly for safety within the vehicle. Should an incident occur, the control centre and police can be contacted immediately. Additionally, you can send a text message to our live support team or an email to our customer services firstname.lastname@example.org. We will investigate the case. Every passenger who books a ride is registered by name in the app, so the risk of harassment should be assumed to be low.
If you realise that you have lost something within four hours, send a message to our live support team by replying to one of our messages. If you only realise that you have lost something later on, please contact our customer services at email@example.com. If you lost the item a long time ago, please contact the BVG lost & found office at Rudolfstr. 1-8, 10245 Berlin-Friedrichshain. Its opening hours are as follows from 3 September 2018: Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Yes. If a party books a ride together, only the person booking the ride pays the full price. Everyone else booked by that person receives a 50% discount on the price of the ride (the discount applies to all price components). The discount also applies to children and adolescents travelling in the company of an adult.
The discount only applies to parties who book a ride together. If someone books a ride for themselves alone, they must pay the full price regardless of whether there are other passengers in BerlKönig or other passengers get into the vehicle.
Generally speaking, you pay for the service through the app. Customers have to create an account and add a payment method such as a credit card or PayPal. This makes the ride a highly efficient process. You can simply pay for the ride using your chosen electronic payment method. Alternatively, after the first few weeks, you can purchase vouchers in the following BVG customer centres in exceptional cases: Alexanderplatz, Holzmarktstr. 15-17 (BVG headquarters), Hermannplatz.
A receipt will be emailed to you after the ride. Invoices can be generated on request.
The BerlKönig service includes wheelchair accessible vehicles that can be booked if necessary. This requires you to register once as a low-mobility passenger in the app. To do this open the menu on the left by clicking the 3 stripe symbol on the top left, then click the arrow on the right of your profile. At the bottom of the pop-up menu slide activate the button for „Wheel Chair Accessible vehicle“ by sliding it to the right. Once this status has been confirmed, the passenger will always be provided with a wheelchair accessible vehicle automatically. Our wheelchair accessible vehicles can accommodate up to 350 kg including the wheelchair user.
In general every passenger needs to pay for his or her seat. In accordance with the VBB tarif, part B section 5.7, this also applies to people with severe disabilities who own the respective voucher. However, if the relevant entries are written in the severely disabled person’s pass, one accompanying passenger may ride free of charge.
In the first few weeks after launch, the service will have around 50 vehicles, although this number will increase in line with demand. During the research and development partnership, we plan to increase our number of vehicles significantly when there is sufficient demand. We use a mixed fleet of vehicles: Mercedes-Benz V-Class vans (Euro 6c) and Mercedes-Benz B250e minivans (fully electric).
All of our vehicles are branded and easily identifiable: black with the seating pattern of the Berlin U-Bahn, a BerlKönig decal and the BVG heart.

BVG has a skilled and experienced partner: ViaVan. ViaVan is a joint venture between Via and Daimler AG. Via is an American provider of ride-pooling services and software solutions and provides large-scale services in New York, Chicago, Washington, Amsterdam and London.
Via develops highly efficient ride-pooling algorithms. These algorithms dynamically calculate millions of possible routes and control the fleet of vehicles. The algorithm can process numerous ride requests and pool them into optimised, shared rides. Customers and drivers are brought together digitally by the app.
It has been shown that connecting and integrating with the local public transport system has a positive effect on traffic. In the medium term, of course, we want to lower the number of vehicles in the inner city and provide another incentive not to use a private vehicle in the city. Think of all the parked cars and the number of commuter vehicles containing just one person.
Focused on individual mobility requirements, BerlKönig is an intelligent and flexible on-demand shuttle service provided by BVG and ViaVan which can be booked through an app. An algorithm compiles ride queries from multiple passengers who want to travel in the same direction, generates a route and books the passengers into one vehicle.
The app is ready to use as soon as you have downloaded it, registered and selected a payment method in the app. After choosing a pick-up point or using location services and entering a destination, the app provides passengers with information about the pick-up point and the price of the ride that passengers can then accept. The pick-up point is only a short walk away. Most of the time, it is a BVG bus stop, crossroads, a street corner or a specific address.
All of the services are app-based and on demand, yet BerlKönig is much more focused on connecting with local public transport:

By pooling rides, BVG aims to lower the number of individual motor vehicles and provide drivers with a convenient public alternative to their own vehicles. The experience of our partner ViaVan with pooled rides in large cities ensures that the quality of the service will remain stable.
After downloading the app, the customer provides the necessary customer data as part of the registration process. These data include the customer’s name, email address, mobile number, payment information and any special requirements (e.g. if the customer is a wheelchair user). All processing of personal data is compliant with the statutory data protection regulations.
As BerlKönig is a pooling service, we ask all passengers to follow four simple rules:
– Book the pick-up and be at the pick-up point before your BerlKönig vehicle arrives
– Limit telephone calls to emergencies or quick problem-solving
– Help us keep our BerlKönig vehicles clean
